Civil Rights & Community Care.
Disarm Inequality. Not Communities.
We believe the right to self-defense and public safety aren’t opposites—they’re partners. Real safety means investing in communities and protecting civil rights, so the privileged and the police aren’t the only ones who can be safe.

About Progressive Defense
Who We Are
Progressive Defense is a civil-rights–focused organization advancing a simple idea: community safety and the right to self-defense belong to everyone—not just the wealthy, the police, or the politically connected.
We are unapologetically progressive. We fight for racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality, workers’ rights, accessible healthcare, and climate action. We also support the Second Amendment—not as a culture-war symbol, but as a civil right that has historically mattered most to people excluded from state protection.
Throughout U.S. history, marginalized communities have relied on lawful armed self-defense when institutions failed them—from labor organizers to civil rights activists, from queer communities facing hate violence to neighborhoods abandoned by public services. Progressive Defense exists in that tradition: collective care, not vigilantism; responsibility, not recklessness.
What Makes Us Different
- We reject the false choice between “gun rights” and “gun safety.”
- We oppose fear-based bans that don’t reduce violence and are enforced disproportionately against Black, brown, poor, and queer people.
- We reject NRA-style absolutism that treats firearms as identity props instead of serious tools requiring training and accountability.
- We advocate for evidence-based violence prevention, community investment, and equal access to lawful self-defense—together, not in competition.
We believe:
When the state holds a monopoly on violence, history shows that violence is rarely used equally.
A Different Kind of
Gun Rights Organization
We reject the false binary of “pro-gun” versus “anti-gun.” We’re progressive, we support the Second Amendment, and we believe safety comes from community investment, harm reduction, and equal access to civil rights—not policies that disarm marginalized people while leaving power untouched.
Violence Prevention
We back what works: community violence intervention, mental health care, housing stability, and good jobs. Prevention over punishment—and fewer families harmed in the first place.
Protect Vulnerable Communities
Gun violence and unequal enforcement hit marginalized communities hardest. We center the people most impacted—Black and brown communities, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and working-class neighborhoods—and fight for safety without scapegoating.
Equitable Access to Rights
Self-defense is a civil right—and civil rights must be equally distributed. We oppose discriminatory enforcement and support accessible training and lawful ownership for people historically denied protection.
History matters
In America, “gun control” has often been used as people control—from discriminatory disarmament to unequal enforcement. We honor the long tradition of community self-defense in movements for justice, and we’re building a future where safety isn’t reserved for the privileged.
Protection.
Responsibility.
Justice.
We reject the false choice between civil liberties and community safety. True progressive values means defending both—championing responsible gun ownership while fighting for the communities most impacted by violence.
Our approach is rooted in equity: addressing systemic issues, investing in prevention, and ensuring that Second Amendment rights extend to everyone—especially those historically denied protection.
Join the Movement →Community Protection
Every neighborhood deserves safety. We advocate for violence intervention, mental health resources, and survivor-centered support—solutions that work without expanding a carceral system that has failed so many communities.
Responsible Ownership
Rights come with responsibilities. We champion comprehensive training, secure storage, and a culture of accountability—because safer ownership protects families, neighbors, and our communities.
Social Justice
Violence is concentrated where poverty, displacement, and neglect are concentrated. We fight for policies that address root causes—housing, healthcare, education, and opportunity—so “public safety” isn’t code for over-policing.
Equal Rights for All
The Second Amendment belongs to everyone. We stand with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC gun owners, oppose discriminatory enforcement, and support programs that make training and safe ownership financially and geographically accessible.
Evidence-Based Policy
We reject both fear-based bans and do-nothing politics. Our advocacy is grounded in research: we support proven violence-prevention strategies, responsible standards with due process, and we oppose measures that burden lawful, working-class owners without improving safety.
Real People,
Real Perspectives
Our community includes organizers, veterans, parents, and activists united by a common belief: safety and rights belong to everyone.
"I grew up in a neighborhood where gun violence took too many people I loved. Progressive Defense understands that protecting communities means investing in them—not just passing laws or telling people to fend for themselves. It means both."
"As a civil rights attorney, I've seen how gun laws are enforced unequally. This organization fights for the Second Amendment to mean something for everyone—including the communities that have been denied that right."
"As a queer person, self-defense isn't abstract—it's survival. Progressive Defense is the only gun rights org that stands with my community while fighting for sensible, evidence-based solutions."
"I served two tours overseas defending this country and the Constitution. Back home, I wanted an organization that honors both my service and my progressive values. Progressive Defense does that without compromise."
"Living in a rural area, a firearm is part of daily life—for protection and for putting food on the table. But I also believe in universal healthcare and workers' rights. Finally, there's a place for people like me."
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you just the NRA, but left-wing?
No.
The NRA has spent decades aligning gun ownership with right-wing politics, corporate interests, and “law and order” narratives that expand policing while ignoring structural violence.
Progressive Defense rejects that model entirely.
We support:
- Universal access to training and safe storage
- Closing domestic violence loopholes with due process
- Community-based safety programs
- Policies that reduce harm without criminalizing poverty or identity
Gun ownership is not a personality or a party. It’s a civil liberty with responsibilities.
Why do you connect gun rights to social justice?
Because historically, gun control has often been enforced as people control.
From slave patrols and Black Codes, to the selective disarmament of Indigenous peoples, to modern disparities in enforcement, restrictions on self-defense have rarely fallen evenly. Even today, gun laws are enforced more harshly against Black, brown, and working-class people—while private security and police remain heavily armed.
At the same time, communities facing state neglect or targeted violence have repeatedly organized for lawful self-defense—from the Black Panther Party to LGBTQ+ self-defense groups like the Pink Pistols.
Civil rights that only work for some people aren’t civil rights at all.
What about mass shootings?
Mass shootings are horrific, and we take them seriously.
But slogans and bans don’t solve complex problems. Research shows mass violence is driven by a mix of:
- social isolation and grievance
- domestic abuse histories
- media contagion effects
- economic stress
- untreated mental health crises
Disarming broad categories of people after the fact doesn’t address those root causes—and often expands police power in ways that harm the same communities already over-policed.
We support:
- Extreme risk (“red flag”) laws with strong due process
- Interventions that identify credible threats early
- Media practices that reduce copycat effects
- Community and mental health resources that prevent crisis escalation
Don’t more guns just mean more violence?
Violence is not evenly distributed—and neither is safety.
Gun violence is most concentrated in communities facing poverty, housing instability, and lack of healthcare. Yet proposed “solutions” often ignore those realities and instead focus on broad restrictions that:
- criminalize technical paperwork violations
- are enforced selectively
- leave structural causes untouched
We don’t argue that firearms are risk-free. We argue that risk must be managed responsibly, not outsourced to a system that has repeatedly failed marginalized people.
That’s why we emphasize:
- training and education
- safe storage
- harm reduction
- accountability without mass criminalization
Do you support any gun regulations at all?
Yes—when they are evidence-based, fair, and respect due process.
We support:
- Universal access to firearm safety training
- Secure storage standards paired with education—not criminal traps
- Closing domestic violence loopholes with clear legal protections
- Risk-based interventions that are narrowly tailored and reviewable
We oppose:
- Vague weapon bans based on aesthetics
- Policies that rely on aggressive policing for enforcement
- Laws that burden lawful owners while ignoring trafficking and root causes
How does this fit with progressive values?
Perfectly.
Progressive values are about reducing harm, expanding autonomy, and protecting the vulnerable.
We believe:
- Healthcare prevents violence better than prisons
- Housing stability saves lives
- Labor rights and community investment reduce crime
- Civil liberties matter even when they’re politically inconvenient
Firearm ownership, when treated seriously and collectively, can be part of a broader ecosystem of community resilience—not a replacement for social programs, but a complement to them.
What does “community defense” mean to you?
It does not mean vigilantism, intimidation, or escalating conflict.
Community defense means:
- mutual aid
- preparedness
- de-escalation
- training and responsibility
- refusing to leave safety solely in the hands of institutions that have proven unequal and unreliable
It’s about collective safety, not individual bravado.
Who is Progressive Defense for?
Progressive Defense is for:
- People who care about racial, economic, and gender justice
- LGBTQ+ individuals who refuse to rely solely on state protection
- Working-class communities disproportionately harmed by both violence and over-policing
- Anyone who believes civil rights should be universal, not conditional
You don’t have to own a firearm to belong here.
You just have to believe safety and dignity should never be reserved for the powerful.
